Advice Needed West Austin: Do you know someone that commutes on 360?

mcb writes "I'm considering commuting to work from the Arboretum area of 360 to Bee Caves and 360. Does anyone commute in the mornings, or ride early on weekdays, on 360? I've ridden 360 many times on the weekends, but I am a little nervous about the way drivers behave during morning rush hour. I will be starting out at about 7:00am.
Thanks for any help!"

Advice Needed South Austin: Biking between South Congress at Stassney and UT?

lauralou writes "Hello,
I am a novice cycler, and I'm planning to get a bike this summer so I can start biking to school at UT in the fall. My house is at South 1st/South Congress and Stassney. I'm wondering how safe it is to bike all the way up South Congress to downtown, then over to Lavaca and up to Guadalupe. South 1st looks way too dangerous, but is South Congress much better? Any route suggestions are appreciated.

thanks!
Laura "

Advice Needed Central Austin: Biking to UT Campus from 38th and Guad

star1827 writes "I want to ride my bike during the school year from the north side of 38th between Guad and Lamar to the UT Campus. Is it safe to ride down Guadalupe? Do people usually use the sidewalk or do they ride in the street? Thank you for your opinions as I haven't ridden my bike to campus or on such public roads before."

Advice Needed Looking for a good repair shop in Austin

bikeman31415 writes "My sister is working long hours and commuting 20 miles each way to work by bike so she never really has time to service her bike or be without it for any length as well. She has tried a couple repair shops in town but she has not been happy with the quality or timelyness of their work. Can anyone recommend a good repair shop in Austin. The bike is a Cannondale touring/commuting bike."

Advice Needed Northwest Austin: Cedar Park to Loop 360 Bridge avoiding FM 2222

ProtectiveWife writes "My husband is going to start commuting to work 3 days a week. We live near El Salido Pkwy and 620 in Cedar Park and he commutes to past the bridge on Loop 360. When driving, the best route is 620 to 2222 to 360, but people are maniacs on 2222! They drive 75mph coming down a hill stretch that has no shoulder whatsoever. It doesn't look quite as dangerous going back (North), but probably still not the safest.

Is the best route going to be south along Anderson Mill, Pickfair Drive and Spicewood Springs as shown here: Northwest Routes or does anyone know of another good way to circumvent 2222?"

Advice Needed West Austin: Bee Cave Road

MARY writes "Although there will be few to answer, I know some of you out there have ridden on Bee Cave Road between 360 and Walsh Tarleton. No shoulder, curvy curves, etc.

Whomever you may be, please send me your thoughts on how that stretch is for you. I have extensive commuter experience from many years ago, so know all about riding predictably, making self EXTREMELY visible, using a rearview mirror, riding defensively, etc. The greatest safety concern in my perception is that, due to the curves, pursuing traffic has almost no decent line of sight.

My challenge for right now is that I'm out of shape, very heavy, and for the present cannot negotiate the steep hills of the less-traveled streets of Rollingwood. So the gentler gradient of Bee Cave is important to me.

For just this next week only, I'd like to use that stretch of Bee Caves to get from where I'm house-sitting (360 & Bee Cave) to the #30 Cap Metro stop at Walsh Tarleton & Bee Cave RD. Who has experience with pursuing traffic on this stretch. Do they seem to see you in time?

Mary"

Advice Needed Central Austin: Falling in sand, and how to go downtown

Caden writes "I'm commuting from Anderson/Shoal Creek to downtown at 6th and Lamar. My route is as follows and is obviously not ideal (why I'm asking for help), mostly because I almost fall off my road bike in the sand on the bike route downtown.

Anderson/Shoal Creek south on Shoal creek to 38th.
*UNDER* 38th and then I walk my bike across the rocks in the park to 34th. (Is there a better way?)
Cross 34th and I'm back on actual road (a short stretch I don't know the name of that leads to Lamar)
Now I get on the sidewalk ALL the way down that long nice fast stretch that goes past frisbee golf, etc until you're downtown and go *under* Lamar and on concrete bike path along Shoal Creek itself all the way to 6th. There's deep loose sand washed up under all the bridges you go under. Very dangerous.

Anyone know the "real" route I should take? Is that long fast luxurious sidewalk I use down Lamar a no-no? I see it's used quite frequently even by road bikers.

Advice Needed Central Austin: Best place to live if commuting to the U or T central campus?

KevinKiller writes "Hi,

I've been offered a chance to move to Austin and work for the downtown U of T. I'm from the snowy, cold, north-east city of Rochester, NY

I currently work at the U or R (University of Rochester) and live in a suburb called Fairport. I can safely commute by bike from my home to my work place every day (as long as it's above 30F and not snowing :-) My commute is between 12 and 20 miles each way (depending on my route) and I only encounter 2 or 3 or 4 stop lights along the way. All the roads I commute on have pavement to the right of the white line of at least 4 to 6 feet, but are usually 6 feet or greater.

I recently came down and spent 4 days visiting Austin and the University and while I think working at the U of T would be pleasant, I just don't see how it would be possible to commute by bike. The roads down there are very narrow and without any kind of shoulders at all. The traffic seems to be very dense and I'm just wondering if it is possible at all. They only mitigating factor I can think of is that my job allows me a totally flexible work schedule. I can time my rides to happen before or after the "rush-hour" traffic. However, I'm not really convinced that "rush-hour" is appropriate. It seems to be more like "rush-4 hours" to me. What do you think?

So, to the question:

If you could pick anywhere 10 to 20 miles from the U of T to live, where would the best place be in regards to commuting back and forth to work every day via road bike?

This is a big issue for me, because I feel the exercise I get commuting would be irreplaceable to my health and well being.

Thanks for all you suggestions,

John.

The trails where I currently live (metro DC) are paved, but I seem to recall Austin having more mountain bike trails than road routes. Are there a lot of road routes in Austin (that are doable for beginners)?

Also, I'd love some advice on what makes a person choose one type of biking over the other . . . thanks!!

Advice Needed commuter biking in Austin

Anonymous writes "Hi,

What sorts of experiences have people had doing commuter biking in Austin? I have considered biking to work sometimes, but with all the huge SUVs being driven by people talking on the phone, I am very concerned that I'll get squished. Is it safer than I think, or am I right to fear being crushed by six tons of metal? How do I make sure I stay safe if I decide to bike to work?"

2) Braker Lane
3) 183 Frontage (requires some mildly illegal manuevers at Mopac no matter how you do it) Are there any other ways to get over or under Mopac between Duval and 183?

Advice Needed West Austin: Safe route from S. Congress to Spicewood Springs

Jamie writes "I want to start bicycle commuting on a road bike to work. Unfortunately, the routes I've been looking at seem VERY dangerous for bikers. Actually, I don't even feel safe driving on some of these roads!
I need to get from the intersection of S.Congress Ave and Riverside to the intersection of MoPac and Spicewood Springs.
If I can get to 360 I just follow that to Spicewood and I'm fine. But getting from S.Congress to 360 is the part where I'm having trouble. I've looked at Red Bud Trail, West Lake Drive and Toro Canyon Drive. All are narrow, hilly and winding roads with no shoulders.
Does anybody have any advice or alternate routes?"
