South Austin: 78748 to 78754
Posted on Monday, June 16, 2008 @ 09:01:24 EDT by Admin
texyak writes "I'm looking for a fast, safe bicycle commute from South Austin (Slaughter & Bilbrook, to be exact) up to Ridgepoint Drive near the 183/290 interchange in Northeast Austin. I've mapped a couple of routes that are around 16-18 miles each way, but I'd have to use Cameron Rd and 290 East and I'm frankly a little leery of both. However, if it has to be done, it has to be done. The shortest route I could come up with is here (http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=1992316). I'd really appreciate any input and advice from the rest of the highly knowledgeable and experienced cycling commuters out there. Thanks in advance!"

Re: 78748 to 78754 (Score: 1) by Platy on Thursday, July 24, 2008 @ 03:25:01 EDT (User Info ) | Another idea for this route is to go multimodal and get a bus boost. The #37 bus goes between downtown and very close to your Ridgepoint destination. Also, as of August 24, 2008 the #1L bus will serve Southpark Meadows.
All Capital Metro buses have racks for two bikes. They are available on a first come first serve basis. Ridership has increased lately, so it's necessary to use a little strategy to increase your chance of getting a bus with a free slot on the bike rack. Routes that don't serve areas with lots of UT students have less demand for the bike racks. Bike racks are most available at the suburban end of a bus route. They are also most available during the non-peak hours.
What I'd probably do is research some route variations that connect up with a few different bus routes, try them out, then use whichever multimodal combination struck my fancy on any particular day. For example, get the maximum bus boost when weather is bad or vitality is low, or not use it at all if I'm feeling frisky that day, etc.
