Central Austin to Travis County Expo Center

On austin bikes, someone asked

We plan to ride out to the Maker Faire the weekend
of Oct. 20-21, and wanted to check in with you guys on route info. Its on
decker lane at Walter E Long Lake/Park.

I found this - http://bicycleaustin.info/getaround/route-elgin.html
Which has some good info - but was wondering if anyone has ridden out this
way recently and can comment on a good route from central austin.
Pflugerville to Loop 360 and US 183

From austin bikes

I have a friend who wants to bike from Pflugerville (say the corner of
Heatherwilde and the Pflugerville Loop) to the Whole Foods in Gateway
Plaza. I've done this ride once or twice and can offer suggestions, but
maybe someone who lives in the area has some specific suggestions for
the best way to go without getting run over?

And Kevin Corry replied...
Looking for a good repair shop in Austin

My sister is working long hours and commuting 20 miles each way to work by bike so she never really has time to service her bike or be without it for any length as well. She has tried a couple repair shops in town but she has not been happy with the quality or timelyness of their work. Can anyone recommend a good repair shop in Austin. The bike is a Cannondale touring/commuting bike.

Cedar Park to Loop 360 Bridge avoiding FM 2222

My husband is going to start commuting to work 3 days a week. We live near El Salido Pkwy and 620 in Cedar Park and he commutes to past the bridge on Loop 360. When driving, the best route is 620 to 2222 to 360, but people are maniacs on 2222! They drive 75mph coming down a hill stretch that has no shoulder whatsoever. It doesn't look quite as dangerous going back (North), but probably still not the safest.

Is the best route going to be south along Anderson Mill, Pickfair Drive and Spicewood Springs as shown here:
Northwest Routes
or does anyone know of another good way to circumvent 2222?

Organized Group Ride Calendar

Heard from Chris

A google group called Austin Bicycling has put together a google
calendar of most of the organized group rides around Austin. Their web
site links to the calendar and discussion forums:

Bee Cave Road

Although there will be few to answer, I know some of you out there have ridden on Bee Cave Road between 360 and Walsh Tarleton. No shoulder, curvy curves, etc.

Whomever you may be, please send me your thoughts on how that stretch is for you. I have extensive commuter experience from many years ago, so know all about riding predictably, making self EXTREMELY visible, using a rearview mirror, riding defensively, etc. The greatest safety concern in my perception is that, due to the curves, pursuing traffic has almost no decent line of sight.

My challenge for right now is that I'm out of shape, very heavy, and for the present cannot negotiate the steep hills of the less-traveled streets of Rollingwood. So the gentler gradient of Bee Cave is important to me.

For just this next week only, I'd like to use that stretch of Bee Caves to get from where I'm house-sitting (360 & Bee Cave) to the #30 Cap Metro stop at Walsh Tarleton & Bee Cave RD. Who has experience with pursuing traffic on this stretch. Do they seem to see you in time?
Berkman & Duval

Saw this opinion posted on the austin bikes list

I just started riding on Berkman Drive recently when I discovered I could avoid the scary 51st street bridge with the low railings by cutting through on Mueller and going past Dell Children?s Hospital, but I do notice a difference. I?ve been cycling up and down Duval a lot since April and there are lots of cars parked in the bicycle lane and I?ve never had a problem taking the lane on Duval.

I?m guessing it is because there are so many bicyclists going up and down Duval street as opposed to Berkman where there are a lot less bicyclists so people have had years to get their knickers in a twist and get over it so bicyclists are just an accepted part of their commutes which supports your argument that we need to stay on the streets as much as possible so they can learn that we are here to stay.
Riverside Sidewalk

I saw this evaluation of Riverside

My commute to work runs the length of Riverside. The
recent rains have caused the grass to really grow and
the sidewalk is no longer visible.

I see other bike-commuters who use the same route and
I invite them to contact the city about cutting the
grass. It isn't nagging and whining. The city doesn't
know that there that much bike traffic on Riverside.

The sidewalk is five feet wide at some parts and
seven feet wide at others. It makes for a safe and
pleasant ride.
